Learn languages, one conversation at a time

The Language learning dictionary that talks back.

Free to start. The dictionary, grammar and study tools work without an account.

Features

Everything you need to go from looking it up to using it.

Six tools that work together, so every word you meet becomes one you can actually say.

Offline dictionary

Over 200,000 entries with readings, pitch accent, verb forms, kanji breakdowns and example sentences. Search in Japanese, English or romaji.

Grammar library

Grammar points from JLPT N5 to N1, each with a clear explanation, how to form it, and examples with furigana.

Spaced-repetition study

Bookmark words and grammar, then review them as flashcards timed to come back just before you would forget them.

Photo scan

Point your camera at a sign, menu or page. Tap any word in the photo to see what it means and save it.

AI chat partner

Chat at your JLPT level in casual, polite or business Japanese. Mistakes are corrected with a short explanation.

Voice practice

Have a spoken conversation built around any word in the dictionary, and hear natural Japanese spoken back to you.

Scan

Read the world around you.

Take a photo and DictoChat finds the Japanese in it. Switch to an English overlay to get the gist, or tap a single word to look it up and add it to your word bank.

  • Signs, menus, packaging and printed pages
  • Tap-to-look-up on every word
  • Saved words flow straight into your reviews

Study

Remember what you learn.

Every word and grammar point you bookmark becomes a flashcard. Grade yourself and DictoChat schedules the next review, so a few minutes a day is enough to keep it all fresh.

  • Spaced repetition for words and grammar
  • Kana, kanji and JLPT vocabulary decks
  • Grammar quizzes by level or from your bookmarks

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Do I need an account?

No. The dictionary, grammar library and study tools work without signing in, with no limits, and your bookmarks are kept on your device. A free account lets you buy credits for chat, voice practice, photo scan and the AI dictionary.

How do credits work?

Each AI action uses a few credits: a chat message uses 1, an AI dictionary lookup 1, a photo scan 3 and a voice session 5. Buy a credit pack whenever you need more. Pro members get credits every month and pay less for packs. Payments are handled securely by Paddle.

Which languages can I learn?

Japanese, with explanations in English. DictoChat is built to support more languages, and they will be added over time.

Does it work offline?

On Android, the dictionary is stored on your phone, so you can look up words without a connection. AI features such as chat, voice and scan need to be online.

What level is it for?

Complete beginners through advanced learners. Set your JLPT level and the chat partner and example sentences adjust to match, from N5 to N1.

Where does the dictionary data come from?

From respected open projects: JMdict and KANJIDIC2 by the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group, pitch accent from Kanjium, and example sentences from the Tatoeba community. Full attribution is in the app's settings.

Which devices are supported?

DictoChat runs in any modern browser and as an Android app. With Pro, your bookmarks and progress sync between them.
